Urgent Veterinary Care for Dogs and Cats in St. Petersburg, FL

Need Care Now? Read This First:

  • We offer same-day urgent care for non-life-threatening issues.
  • Walk-ins are welcome, but please call ahead if you can: 727-323-1311
  • Patients are seen based on medical urgency, not order of arrival.
  • If you think it’s urgent, bring them in.

You know your pet best. If something seems out of the norm and you’re concerned, we’re concerned. Our best recommendation is to bring your pet in for an examination.

Here When It Matters Most

At St. Petersburg Animal Hospital & Urgent Care, we provide walk-in and same-day veterinary care for dogs and cats who need to be seen quickly—but not necessarily rushed to a 24-hour emergency hospital. Whether it’s a limp, a wound, or something that just doesn’t feel right, we’re here to help you figure out what’s going on and what comes next.

If this is your first time with us, welcome. Many of our long-term clients first found us in a moment of uncertainty. Our goal is to provide thoughtful, responsive care when you need it most and to be the team you turn to again for wellness visits, ongoing care, and everything in between.

Call Us Immediately If…

Not sure if your pet needs to be seen today? These are some of the most common symptoms we recommend acting on right away:

  • Your cat is straining to urinate
  • Your dog has vomiting and diarrhea at the same time, especially if they seem tired or won’t eat
  • Your pet has pale gums or is breathing heavily or rapidly
  • Your pet was just bitten, stung, or hit by something
  • You notice a bloated abdomen or obvious signs of pain
  • Your pet is trying to vomit but can’t produce anything
  • You’ve seen blood in your pet’s urine, stool, or vomit
  • They’ve ingested something toxic or a non-food object

We understand how stressful it can be when your pet isn’t acting like themselves. If you’re unsure what to do, give us a call. We’ll talk through your concerns and help you decide the right next step.

What We Treat

Urgent care visits often start with a gut feeling. Your dog’s suddenly limping. Your cat won’t eat. Something’s not right—but you’re not sure how serious it is or whether it can wait. That’s why we keep space in our schedule every day for urgent cases. When your pet needs to be seen quickly, we’re ready.

Once you arrive, we’ll evaluate your pet, run diagnostics if needed, and explain what we find in clear, straightforward terms. Some pets go home the same day with medication and a care plan. Others may need fluids, monitoring, or short-term hospitalization. Whatever the case, we’ll walk you through the next steps.

Common conditions we treat:

  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Lethargy or sudden weakness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Seizures
  • Coughing or sneezing
  • Limping or lameness
  • Cuts, bites, or wounds
  • Facial swelling or allergic reactions
  • Urinary issues or straining
  • Pain or stiffness
  • Minor trauma or difficulty walking
  • Lumps, bumps, or rashes
  • Allergies or skin issues
  • Ingestion of non-toxic foreign objects
  • Pain management and follow-up support

Not every issue is life-threatening. But if something’s changed—and it has you worried—we’re here to help.

What to Expect

Urgent care can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re not sure what’s going on with your pet. Our goal is to make the process as calm, clear, and efficient as possible:

  • Walk-in or call ahead. If you can call before you come in, we’ll be better prepared. If not, just come—we’ll do our best to get your pet seen quickly.
  • Triage-based care. Patients are prioritized based on the severity of their condition, not order of arrival. If another pet is seen first, it’s because their situation is more critical.
  • Same-day treatment. Our team will examine your pet, talk with you about symptoms, and perform any necessary diagnostics using our on-site lab, digital X-rays, or ultrasound.

We’ll explain everything clearly, answer your questions, and give you a written summary of your pet’s condition and care plan before you leave.

Urgent vs. Emergency Care

We are not a 24-hour emergency hospital—but we can treat many urgent medical issues and even some emergency surgeries if circumstances allow.

We can often accommodate surgeries like:

  • Pyometras
  • Gastrointestinal foreign bodies
  • Splenectomies
  • GDV (bloat) corrections

Please call ahead for these cases so we can ensure proper staffing and surgical availability.

If your pet is experiencing a life-threatening emergency—such as collapse, severe trauma, or trouble breathing—please go directly to the nearest emergency facility.

Common Signs Your Pet May Need Urgent Care

Here are some signs we recommend you take seriously. If your pet is experiencing any of the following, contact us or come in as soon as possible:

  • Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
  • Pale gums or tongue
  • Straining to urinate or pass stool
  • Bleeding, visible wounds, or trauma
  • Swollen face, eyes, or limbs
  • Bloated abdomen
  • Repeated vomiting or diarrhea
  • Refusing to eat or drink
  • Acting disoriented, painful, or unusually quiet
  • Exposure to toxins or foreign object ingestion
  • Eye injuries, squinting, or vision issues
  • Abnormal behavior or refusal to lie down/move

When in doubt, reach out. We’d rather see your pet early and offer reassurance than have you wait, worry, and end up at an emergency hospital later. Getting answers now can mean simpler treatment, lower costs, and a more comfortable experience for both of you.

If you’re visiting us for the first time, we’re glad you found us. Urgent care may be how we meet—but it doesn’t have to be the only reason you come.
